East Bay Dads - Winter Olympics

02/22/2010 - 10:30
02/22/2010 - 15:14

With roots running back a whole two years, the East Bay Dads Olympics are the premier showcase for children's athleticism and good sportspersonship. We'll have a few events that resemble real Olympic events (slalom, beer cooler bobsled) and some that don't (curling, figure skating). Games will begin at 11:30 so be sure to have your kid dressed in his/her favorite country's colors. Malcolm and I have made up some medals for the winners to take home. See you at Montclair Playground

Berkeley Aquatic Park

02/08/2010 - 10:00

We are going to the Berkeley Aquatic Park. There are a few big play structures, swings, lots of grass for playing on, and a path for the big kids to ride bikes on. (Kinda similar to Orinda park, but more fog and hippies.) Aquatic Park is just south of University Avenue, between Highway 80 and San Pablo. The easiest approach is to take 6th Street and turn down Bancroft (heading west, toward the water), crossing the train tracks, then turn left on the road that just parallels the water.

Here is a map.

Lawrence Hall of Science

01/18/2010 - 10:30

Looks like most forecasts are predicting rain for Monday. Instead of braving the elements (wet slides = yuck!),let's go to last week's weather backup: the Lawrence Hall of Science (map link).

Lawrence Hall of Science

1 Centennial Drive
Berkeley, CA 94720

Meeting place: The museum opens at 10am so feel free to come early. I nominate the beachball canons near the front entrance (when you see it, you'll know what I mean!) as the meeting place.

Holiday Schedule: the LHS website indicates that there are events planned for Monday, and that it is only closed for Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I am assuming  that that means it will be business as usual despite it being an academic holiday.

Lunch: While they do have a cafeteria, from a financial point of view, it's probably best to consider alternatives. Any takers for a roadtrip to Pyramid Brewhouse?

Parking: If you have never been to LHS, when you park remember the parking space number. When you get to LHS, there is a place for you to enter your space number and pre-pay for parking. I generally pay for two hours and that usually covers me.

Fees:

  • $12 -- Adults
  • $9 -- Students (7-18)/Senior (62+)
  • $6 -- Children 3-6
  • Free -- Children <3

Discounts: LHS does offer reciprocity towards some ACM members (e.g. I believe a Habitot member pays half price).

Oakland Zoo

01/11/2010 - 10:30

Let's check out some animals! Meet by the flamingos at 10:30.  Bring a sack lunch.  If you want to pay tribute to Urb, bring cans of beer that look like soda.

Oakland Zoo

12/21/2009 - 10:30
12/21/2009 - 14:13

We'll meet by the flamingos at the gate at 10:30.  Bring a lunch.

Marina Park

12/14/2009 - 10:00

Nice park situated on the famed San Leandro coast - the East Bay Riviera, if you will. Grills, tables, play structure and a massive field for Malcolm and Luke to tackle each other on.  Airplanes fly right above you on their decent to nearby Oakland International. Also a nice bayside path with sweet views of the city. To get there, exit 880 on Marina Blvd. westbound. Follow Marina Blvd. all the way to the end where it will veer to the left onto Monarch Bay Dr. Follow Monarch Bay Dr. past Fairway Dr. Marina Park will be on the right.
