Grateful Dads Hike

Grateful Dads,

I hope that you can join us for our hike at Sibley Regional Park in Piedmont on Saturday, May 17 at 9:00am.  I have attached a PDF flyer for this hike, which includes maps, and have also copied the text of this announcement below.  If you haven’t been to Sibley before, it is a very different experience.  There is something neat about walking around inside an ancient volcano.  Plus, the views from the top are quite outstanding.

Grateful Dads – East Bay Chapter

Hike #49

Sibley Regional Park

Round Top Trail / Volcanic Trail

Saturday, May 17, 2008, 9:00am

Sibley Regional Park was one of the first three East Bay Regional Parks, and was dedicated in 1936.  An old quarry site north of Round Top was added in 1977, bringing the Preserve’s size to 381 acres.  Another 272 acres northwest of the park, containing another quarry area, was acquired in 1991, and brought the Preserve even

closer to its current 660 acres.  (The newest acquisition is being held as a land bank, and is currently closed to the public.)  With the addition of these quarry sites, the Park District inherited a cross-section look at relics of the volcanic activity that occurred in the Berkeley Hills.

The Round Top Trail leads from the meeting area (see directions on next page) up to the Volcanic Trail.  Along the Volcanic Trail we’ll see some of the evidence of past volcanic activity in these hills.  At the top, we will stop for a snack break.  From the top, we’ll take the Loop Trail back down towards the meeting area.  This trail is a moderate uphill climb, and mostly level at the top.  The entire hike is about 3.5 miles, and more than half of this will be spent at the top of the old volcano on some of the trails that wind around the top portion.  Our hike will last about 2.5 hours, and will be followed by a picnic lunch near the meeting area.

SCHEDULE:

9:00am SHARP – meet up and head out.  If you’re late…catch up to us!

11:30am – return to parking/picnic area for lunch

(bring whatever you want, even coolers, since we’ll be eating within a short walk of our cars)

DIRECTIONS

From the south, take I-580 north to Highway 13.  Take Highway 13 north to the Broadway Terrace (or Glenwood Glad Rd) exit in Piedmont.  Make a right on Broadway Terrace and go up into the hills.  Broadway Terrace will turn into Skyline Blvd.  Take Skyline Blvd. only a short distance, and go past the intersection with Grizzly Peak Road.  The park entrance is just past this intersection on the left.  There is not a lot of parking here, but it shouldn’t be a problem this early in the morning.  We will meet here at the parking area, where there is a visitor’s center with bathrooms.

We’ll gather by the trailhead at 9:00am SHARP (if late…catch up).  At the end of the hike we will return to this point, and will have a picnic lunch.  There are a couple of good sitting areas near the parking lot to have a picnic lunch.

I’ll be driving a green and tan Subaru Outback.
