Grateful Dads Hike - Saturday 7/19

Hello Hikers!

I'm passing on this info for anyone interested. The Grateful Dads have hikes every month on the 3rd Saturday...

Grateful Dads – East Bay Chapter
Hike # 51
Joaquin Miller Park
Bayview/Sequoia Trail
Saturday, July 19, 2008, 9:00am – 11:30am

Joaquin Miller park is a City of Oakland park, but most of the time you’ll feel like you were anywhere but in the city.  The trails in this park vary from those with magnificent Bay views to those which delve deep into cool dark canyons.  During the rainy period the streams through the park can swell, and will provide a welcome background noise for the hike.  Be prepared though, because within a week after a good rain, the trails can be quite muddy, so wear good hiking boots.  We’ll start out at the ranger station/community center parking lot (see map and directions on next page), then we’ll climb up towards the Bayview/Sequoia Trail through a canyon.  This trail winds around for about a mile, then heads back down toward another canyon.  Near the end of the hike is a big grassy meadow where the kids can run around.  A picnic lunch back by the meeting area will cap off the hike.  This 3.5 mile loop hike is easy, with about 500 feet in elevation change.  Park elevation ranges from about 800 feet to 1,500 feet.  The hike starts at about 1,090 feet, climbs to 1,350 feet, and descends to 930 feet before climbing back to the trailhead.

SCHEDULE:
9:00am SHARP – meet up and head out.  If you’re late…catch up to us!
11:00am-11:30am – Picnic lunch.
(bring whatever you want, even coolers, since we’ll be eating next to our cars)

DIRECTIONS
From Castro Valley, take I-580 north to Highway 13.  Follow Highway 13 north to Joaquin Miller Road.  Follow Joaquin Miller Road east (right) to Sanborn Drive.  There are two entrances for Sanborn Drive – go past the first one, which is usually gated.  Turn left into the park at the second one.  The ranger station/community center are on the left just a short drive into the park.  We will meet in the parking lot between these two buildings at 9:00am SHARP.  Look for my green/tan Subaru Outback wagon.  We will have a picnic lunch at this location at the end of the hike.
