Join us at the Orinda Community Park for our weekly playgroup. Two play structures, grills, free parking, convenient to BART and near several food options.

This week we're filming an audition video for TLC, A Discovery Network Channel. So wear something clean (or least put the kid in something clean) and be prepared to answer the following questions:

my name is......

This is my kid __ . He/she is _ years old.

I joined the dads group because........

the hardest thing about being an at-home dad is..........

This is a zero commitment audition video. TLC is merely exploring the possibility of a TV series based on a dads group.

Check the discussion group for details.

Monday December 8, 2008
Start: 10:30
End: 14:30

Weather permitting we'll grill. Otherwise there are a few dining options nearby. Check Discussion Board Monday AM for details.

This is the final opportunity to get you and your child into the TLC audition videos for the TV series on a dads group.

Grateful Dads,

This Saturday is our last hike for 2008.  Please join us on Mount Diablo for what always is a spectacular hike with wonderful views.  The details for this hike are copied below, and the PDF flyer is attached to this email.  Also attached to this email is our new 2009 hike schedule.  Due to a lot of Saturday activities for my kids in the coming year I am changing the hike time each week to 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Sundays from our usual Saturday morning hikes.  I hope that this change will also help to accommodate a lot of you who have busy Saturdays.  Please visit our web site at www.gratefuldads.com for our latest hike announcements as well as for great tips on hiking with your kids.

I will be sitting out this week’s hike and at least the January one due to knee surgery that I’m having in a couple of weeks.  If anyone is able to be the leader for this one or the January hike please let me know.  There are no special instructions for the leader – just keep the group on the path and schedule laid out in the flyers.

Best wishes to all of you during the holidays, and I hope to see you on the trails in 2009.

Regards,
Allen

Grateful Dads – East Bay Chapter
Hike # 56
Mount Diablo State Park
Rock City and Fire Interpretive Trail
Saturday, December 13, 2008, 9:00am – 12:00pm

Mount Diablo rises 3,849 feet above sea level, and is the tallest mountain in the California Coast Range in Northern California.  On a clear day, from its summit you can see more of the surface of the earth than from any mountain except Mt. Kilamanjaro in Africa.  From Mt. Diablo, you can see well out to sea to the west, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park to the east, well into the San Joaquin Valley to the south and to the north you can see to Oregon.  The first part of this hike is the Fire Interpretive Trail, which offers spectacular vistas of the entire Bay Area.  This trail, accessible from the summit, is a gentle 0.7-mile loop.  You can also visit the summit museum and observation deck, which is a must-do experience in the Bay Area.  The second part of the hike is Rock City, which is comprised of unusually large sandstone formations and small caves.  It is a perfect natural playground for the little ones to explore.  Rock City is not a long trail, but you’ll find it difficult to pry the kids off of these rock formations and out of the little caves.

SCHEDULE:
9:00am SHARP – meet up and head out.  If you’re late…catch up to us!
11:30am-12:00pm – Rock City area for a picnic lunch
(bring whatever you want, even coolers, since we’ll be eating next to our cars)

DIRECTIONS
From Pleasanton, take I-680 north from Pleasanton/Dublin area, and exit at Diablo Road (going east - right).  You must turn right after a little while in order to stay on Diablo Road.  You'll come to a stop sign, which is Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard (turn left).  Follow this winding road up the mountain to the entrance gate.  Past the entrance is the "Rock City / Live Oak" picnic area on the left, which is the second stop on this hike.  Drive up to the summit and access the Fire Interpretive Trail from the parking lot near the museum.  Meet up with the hike leader (yet to be determined), and follow this 0.7 mile loop, perhaps ending at the museum and observatory.
The second part of the hike will be the Rock City area that you passed on the way up.  Drive down to the Rock City picnic area and meet up in the parking lot.  The trail into Rock City is just off of the main parking lot. After the kids have had a good amount of time romping around the rock formations, there will be a picnic lunch back at the picnic area near the cars.
