Let's check out some animals! Meet by the flamingos at 10:30. Bring a sack lunch. If you want to pay tribute to Urb, bring cans of beer that look like soda. | ||

Looks like most forecasts are predicting rain for Monday. Instead of braving the elements (wet slides = yuck!),let's go to last week's weather backup: the Lawrence Hall of Science (map link).
1 Centennial Drive Meeting place: The museum opens at 10am so feel free to come early. I nominate the beachball canons near the front entrance (when you see it, you'll know what I mean!) as the meeting place. Holiday Schedule: the LHS website indicates that there are events planned for Monday, and that it is only closed for Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I am assuming that that means it will be business as usual despite it being an academic holiday. Lunch: While they do have a cafeteria, from a financial point of view, it's probably best to consider alternatives. Any takers for a roadtrip to Pyramid Brewhouse? Parking: If you have never been to LHS, when you park remember the parking space number. When you get to LHS, there is a place for you to enter your space number and pre-pay for parking. I generally pay for two hours and that usually covers me. Fees:
Discounts: LHS does offer reciprocity towards some ACM members (e.g. I believe a Habitot member pays half price).

Grateful Dads,
Please join us on our first hike of the 2010 season. We’ll be at the Lafayette Reservoir once again. The kids like the hike around the lake, plus they really like the cool play structure at the end of the hike. It’s supposed to be only a small chance of rain on Sunday, but you should bring your rain coats just in case. I’ve copied the details of this hike below, and have attached a PDF with a map to this email as well. Please visit our web site at www.gratefuldads.com for more information on our hikes all around the Bay Area, as well as for great tips on hiking with your children. I’ve also attached our new 2010 hike schedule to this email.
Hope to see all of you out on our hikes in 2010!
Best Regards, Allen

Grateful Dads – East Bay Chapter Hike # 69 Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area Lakeside Trail Sunday, January 24, 2010, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
The Lafayette Recreation Area is an all-year, day-use area, which is ideal for hiking, jogging, fishing, boating and picnicking. Rowboats and pedal boats are available for rent. The enormous playground on the East Lawn offers lively fun for children. The park has restrooms and a fishing dock with adjacent parking. The Lakeside Trail is a gentle, paved trail, which makes a ring around the reservoir. Baby joggers, and even strollers, are easy to use on this hike. We will take this trail from the meeting area (see directions on next page) to the right towards the activity center (boat rental area). Mid-way around the lake we will take a snack break / diaper changing break. We’ll follow this trail as it continues to wind around the reservoir, and will end up at the play structure on the East Lawn near the parking lot. The entire hike is 2.7 miles, and will last only 1.5 hours, not counting the play-time at the end.
SCHEDULE: 1:00pm SHARP – meet up and head out. If you’re late…catch up to us! 2:30pm-3:00pm – Kids can play on the play structure on the East Lawn.
DIRECTIONS From Castro Valley, take I-580 north to Highway 13. Follow Highway 13 north to Highway 24. Take Highway 24 east (through the tunnel). Exit at Alcalanes Road/Diablo Road exit. Follow Diablo Road east about ½ mile. There are signs marking the entrance to the reservoir. At the main parking lot enter the “All Day” parking area, and pay the $6.00 fee (need exact change). The other lot only allows parking for 2 hours, and we will probably go longer than that. Once in the main parking area, try to park as close to the east end (number 1 on map below) as you can. We will meet here at 1:00pm SHARP. Look for my green/tan Subaru Outback wagon. We will follow the Lakeside Trail around the reservoir counterclockwise, stopping at location number 2 on the map for a snack and diaper-changing break. At number 3 on the map there is a huge play structure.
